Theseus Visits the Labyrinth
Theseus founded the Panathenaea festival in Athens. He went to Crete to free Athens from tribute (youths fed to a monster in the Labyrinth). He killed the monster, escaped using thread from the king's daughter, but forgot to change his sails from black to white. His father Aegeus, thinking him dead, threw himself into the sea (now the Aegean Sea). Theseus ruled well but grew harsh in old age; the Athenians drove him out, and he was killed on Scyros. Later, they regretted this and built him a temple. Hercules' descendants (Heraclidae) were banished for 100 years.
