The Cid: Exile and Cowardice

King Alfonso exiles the Cid on false charges. In exile, the Cid conquers Valencia from the Moors, creating his own kingdom. Alfonso's jealousy fades, and he arranges the Cid's daughters to marry the Counts of Carrion - nobles who prove to be cowards. When a lion escapes, they hide while the Cid calmly leads it back to its cage. Their cowardice becomes a public humiliation.
