Ragnar earns fame by slaying a great serpent to win his first wife, Lodgerda the shield-maiden. He wears special shaggy breeches (lodbrok) to protect himself from the serpent's poison, giving him his famous name. After Lodgerda, he marries again and has many adventures, becoming the most famous Viking of his age.
