The Sons of Aymon: Sacrifice and Sainthood

The brothers hold out in their fortress of Montauban, surviving siege and starvation. Peace comes at a terrible price: Charlemagne demands that Bayard be drowned. The loyal horse is weighted with stones and thrown into the river, but miraculously escapes and disappears into the forest forever. Renaud gives up war, becomes a humble laborer, and dies a saint - murdered by jealous workers but glorified by miracles.
