The four sons of Aymon - Renaud, Alard, Guichard, and Richard - find themselves at war with Charlemagne after Renaud kills the emperor's nephew in a quarrel. The magic horse Bayard, who can carry all four brothers at once and expand to fit them, becomes their salvation. Their wizard cousin Malagigi helps them escape Charlemagne's wrath again and again.
