Leonidas at Thermopylae

The Spartans sent King Leonidas with only 300 Spartans and a few allies to hold the narrow pass of Thermopylae. When Xerxes demanded they surrender their weapons, Leonidas replied with true laconic brevity: "Come and take them." The Spartans combed their hair and dressed in their finest, preparing to die. When told Persian arrows would darken the sun, one Spartan said, "Then we shall fight in the shade." The Immortals were driven back repeatedly.
