Preparations For Defense

Faced with invasion, Greek cities met to plan defense. Aristides was recalled from exile; past quarrels were forgotten. The oracle at Delphi gave a frightening prophecy but mentioned "wooden walls" as protection. Most thought this meant the Acropolis fence, but Themistocles argued it meant ships. Athens evacuated its women and children and prepared its fleet. Sparta would lead on land, Athens at sea.
