The Great Army
Xerxes spent years preparing the largest army ever assembled - millions of soldiers from across his empire. He bridged the Hellespont with boats to march into Europe. When a storm destroyed the bridge, Xerxes ordered the sea whipped and branded as punishment. He rebuilt the bridge and his army marched across. As they passed, an old man wept, knowing none would be alive in a hundred years.
