Miltiades' Disgrace

After Marathon, Miltiades was honored as a hero. But when he led a failed expedition against the island of Paros and was wounded, the Athenians turned against him. He was accused of deceiving the people and fined heavily. Unable to pay, he was thrown in prison where he died of his wound. His son Cimon later paid the fine to restore the family honor. Themistocles, who foresaw another Persian invasion, convinced Athens to build a great navy.
