The Battle of Marathon

At Marathon, the tiny Greek army charged the Persians so fiercely that they routed the huge Persian host. Hippias died in the battle. One Greek soldier held a Persian ship with his hand, then his teeth, until he was killed. A soldier ran to Athens with the news, gasped "Rejoice, we have conquered!" and fell dead. The Spartans arrived too late, regretting that they had missed the battle. Miltiades marched back to defend Athens before the Persian fleet could attack it.
