The Advance of the Second Host

Darius sent a second, larger army across the sea directly to Greece, with Hippias as guide. The Persians destroyed Eretria and enslaved its people. Athens sent Phidippides running to Sparta (140 miles in two days) to beg for help. Sparta promised to come but said their religious law forbade marching until the full moon. Miltiades led a tiny Athenian force to Marathon to face the vast Persian army.
