Destruction of the Persian Host

Darius sent heralds to Greek cities demanding earth and water as signs of submission. Athens and Sparta refused, throwing the heralds into pits. Darius sent a great fleet and army against Greece, but a terrible storm destroyed most of the Persian ships near Mount Athos. The survivors were attacked by Thracian tribes. This first invasion failed before reaching Greece.
