The Great King

Hippias fled to Asia Minor and sought help from Darius, the Great King of Persia. Darius ruled an enormous empire from Ecbatana, a city with seven colored walls. Satraps governed provinces and sent daily reports. The palace overflowed with gold and jewels. Darius had spies everywhere and knew all that happened in his realm. When Hippias arrived seeking help to regain Athens, Darius agreed to receive him.
